In December 2024, Falconers CEO Martin and Head of Digital Earth projects Lara attended travelled to Arusha, Tanzania to meet project partner TAFORI (Tanzania Forest Research Institute).
During our stay, we also attended the 3rd International TAFORI Scientific Conference at Arusha International Conference Center. It was a good opportunity to get more acquainted with local forest preservation organisations as well as meet colleagues from Finland's Arbonaut. Where else would it be more suitable for Estonian and Finnish remote sensing companies to meet?
The Tanzania Forestry Research Institute (TAFORI) manages over 1,000 research trial plots across the country, and handles over 1 million ha of forests across the country. Unfortunately, Tanzania is losing 400ha per day (11Mha per year) to fires and illegal activities, with the main causes being antropogenic activities. Between July-August 2024, 9240 fires were recorded.
Together with TAFORI we are exploring opportunities to prevent forest fires through early warning and multi-layered surveillance systems. The project is funded by the Estonian Environmental Agency.
We would like to express our gratitude to KIK for your support and to our good partner TAFORI.
We look forward to taking further steps together and creating positive changes in Tanzania.
